MIU Athletics Accepted into the USCAA, Marking Major Milestone in Program Growth

MIU Athletics has officially been accepted as a full member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), marking a major milestone in the university's continued rise as an emerging collegiate athletics program.

The acceptance provides Pioneer student-athletes with opportunities to compete for national championships while strengthening MIU's competitive foundation as the department continues its strategic growth toward full NAIA membership. It also reflects the significant progress made since the launch of MIU Athletics, as the university continues building a distinctive model centered on Consciousness-Based Sports and whole-person development.

"This milestone reflects the work we've done to build a strong foundation for MIU Athletics," said Rubén Sanchez, MIU Athletics Director. "Joining the USCAA gives our student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level while continuing to grow our program with purpose."

The USCAA is a national athletic association that serves small colleges and universities across the United States, providing championship opportunities, national competition, and a flexible scheduling model that supports developing athletics programs. For MIU, membership creates an important competitive platform while helping establish the compliance, eligibility, and operational framework necessary for sustained success.

"The USCAA treats athletics as part of the educational experience, not separate from it, and they support student-athletes at smaller schools by providing real competitive opportunities and national recognition," said Owen Blake, Associate Athletics Director. "That's why we're so excited to partner with them. At MIU, we develop student-athletes on every level, and now they have a national championship structure to test that development against. We're ready for the challenge and the opportunity, and we're excited to elevate the student-athlete experience through joining the USCAA."

The announcement comes during a period of remarkable momentum for MIU Athletics. Over the past year, the department has expanded its varsity offerings, welcomed nationally accomplished coaches, increased student-athlete enrollment, announced a partnership with Nike and BSN Sports, and continued laying the foundation for future NAIA competition.

Beginning this academic year, MIU will compete in men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's cross country, and esports. USCAA membership will allow these programs to compete for postseason championships while continuing to elevate the university's national profile.

The association highlighted MIU's unique educational philosophy as one of the reasons the university stood out during the membership process.

"Maharishi International University, located in Fairfield, Iowa, is a mission-driven institution dedicated to educating the whole person through its innovative Consciousness-Based Education model," the USCAA said in its announcement. "Joining the USCAA represents an important step in strengthening its competitive opportunities while developing the compliance, eligibility, and operational infrastructure necessary for long-term success."

The organization also recognized MIU's commitment to developing student-athletes beyond competition, noting the university's emphasis on academic excellence, experiential learning, leadership, service, and holistic development within a diverse campus community.

"We are excited to welcome Maharishi International University to the USCAA," said BJ Bertges, Chief Executive Officer of the USCAA. "MIU's commitment to developing the whole student through academic excellence, personal growth, and meaningful athletic opportunities makes them an outstanding addition to our Association. We look forward to supporting their continued growth and providing championship opportunities for their student-athletes as they build the future of their athletics program."

The announcement has generated excitement throughout MIU's coaching staff as programs prepare to begin competition under the USCAA banner.

"Joining the USCAA is a tremendous opportunity to establish our presence in collegiate athletics," said Caio Pereira, associate head coach of the men's soccer program. "Our team is ready to put in the work, embrace the challenge, and make the most of this opportunity."

Women's soccer and cross-country head coach Rafael Muniz believes the membership creates an exciting opportunity for student-athletes from the very beginning of MIU's varsity journey.

"I'm incredibly excited that our teams will have the opportunity to compete in the USCAA during this first year," Muniz said. "It gives our student-athletes the chance to compete at a high level while continuing to grow both as athletes and as individuals. It's a tremendous opportunity for our entire program."

For MIU Athletics, USCAA membership represents more than a new competitive affiliation, it serves as national recognition of the department's vision and the progress made in building a program that combines athletic excellence with Consciousness-Based Education. As the Pioneers continue expanding their varsity programs and preparing for future NAIA membership, the affiliation provides another important step in establishing MIU as a destination for student-athletes seeking success both in competition and in life.
