MIU Esports Builds Momentum with 2–0 Victory Over CSULB in Late-Night Showdown
The MIU Pioneers secured a decisive 2–0 victory over California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in a late-night League of Legends matchup on Thursday.
After weeks of negotiation, MIU agreed to compete at the opponent's preferred 10:00 p.m. start time, significantly later than the team's typical competition window. Despite the unusual hour, the Pioneers delivered a composed and dominant performance in both games of the series.
Preparation for a 10:00 PM Match
Competing at a nontraditional hour required intentional preparation. The coaching staff implemented a structured performance plan centered on what we call the "Four Levels of Performance," Spiritual, Emotional, Mental, and Physical, ensuring the team was fully prepared well before champion select.
Rather than treating the late start as a disadvantage, MIU used it as an opportunity to demonstrate maturity and professionalism. The team remained intentional about preparation, balancing rest, nutrition, mental focus, and emotional balance.
Game One
MIU Picks: Kai'Sa (Aaron Ellis), Nocturne (Cole Kerrigan), Malphite (Skylar Allen), Orianna (Christopher Revolinski), Sett (Aaron Painter)
Playing on red side, MIU opened the series with first blood and remained competitive through the early stages. At the 11:30 mark, the Pioneers secured their first dragon, followed by a second at 17:04. Momentum shifted decisively at 22:34 when MIU claimed Baron Nashor, setting up a strong mid-to-late game push.
By the 35-minute mark, MIU controlled the map with 18 kills, 64,000 gold, six towers destroyed, four dragons secured, and two barons claimed.
Coach Enlow introduced an unconventional bot lane strategy in the opener, with Ace and Skylar executing the plan effectively despite it being an uncommon pairing. The adjustment proved successful as MIU closed out the game.
Final Score: MIU 22, CSULB 16
Game Two
MIU Picks: Pantheon (Cole Kerrigan), Tristana (Aaron Ellis), Ornn (Aaron Painter), Swain (Christopher Revolinski), Nami (Skylar Allen)
On blue side in Game Two, MIU once again secured first blood, with Aaron (Ornn) initiating early pressure. The Pioneers earned their first dragon at 11:30 and maintained objective control throughout the mid game.
A key strategic adjustment came during champion select, as MIU utilized Pantheon to create draft flexibility. When CSULB responded with strong counter-picks, midlaner Bobby selected Swain to balance the matchup and maintain control.
MIU secured Baron at approximately the 25-minute mark and extended its lead to 12–6 in kills by 27 minutes, holding a 50,000 to 44,500 gold advantage. The Pioneers closed the game in commanding fashion.
Final Score: MIU 22, CSULB 8
Series Summary
With the 2–0 sweep, MIU demonstrated discipline, adaptability, and strong objective control throughout the series, a reflection not only of in-game strategy, but of intentional preparation leading up to match time.
Following the match, Coach Enlow reflected on the team's mindset:
"Whatever you think about the most will dominate your mind. You have to choose if you're looking for reasons why you can, or reasons why you can't."
On a late Thursday night, the Pioneers chose belief, and performance followed.
Series Result: MIU 2, CSULB 0
