MIU Esports League of Legends Team Heads to NECC Playoffs After Historic Regular Season
The Maharishi International University (MIU) Pioneers League of Legends team is set to compete in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Playoffs next week following an outstanding regular season performance.
About League of Legends
For those unfamiliar, esports are competitive video games, often played at collegiate and professional levels. While all esports are video games, not all video games are esports. League of Legends is a 5-on-5 team-based strategy game where players must work together to level up, gather strength, and ultimately take down the opponent's base. Each match begins with a draft phase, in which players select from over 150 champions, each with unique abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and synergies. Every match is unique, requiring strategy, communication, coordination, fast reflexes, and mind-body precision.
Season Highlights
MIU delivered a dominant season, securing key victories against programs such as Ithaca College, North Dakota State University, New Mexico State University, and Tarleton University. The Pioneers built momentum with six consecutive wins before their final regular-season match against Concordia University, St. Paul, which ended their streak. Despite the loss, the team enters the postseason with confidence and a solid foundation built over months of preparation and competition.
Coach Eric Enlow on the Season
"MIU finished the regular season with a 6–1 record as the second seed in our conference," said Coach Enlow. "Expectations are high as we map our path through the playoffs and aim for an invitation to the national tournament. Our last game brought frustrations but also renewed determination. The team is motivated to make MIU history."
The MIU Pioneers will begin their NECC Playoff journey next week, aiming to continue their strong form and compete for a championship title. With a full season of momentum behind them, the Pioneers are ready to return to the Rift and represent MIU on the national stage.
