Makena Hurse Named Head Coach of MIU Women’s Flag Football Team
Maharishi International University is proud to announce Makena Hurse as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Flag Football team, marking an exciting step forward for the Pioneers program as it continues to expand opportunities for women in collegiate athletics.
Fairfield, Iowa — Hurse brings to MIU more than a decade of hands-on experience in flag football: as a player, coach, and referee. She began playing the sport at just 11 years old, quickly developing a deep connection to the game that has shaped her personal and professional journey ever since. By the age of 22, she was already organizing and managing youth and adult flag football leagues, fostering community engagement and mentoring young athletes through teamwork and sportsmanship.
"Flag football has always been more than a sport to me," Hurse shared. "It's been a space where I've found confidence, connection, and purpose. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to bring that same experience to MIU and to help young women discover their own power through this game."
Known for her energy, inclusivity, and player-first coaching philosophy, Hurse emphasizes team culture, communication, and empowerment as the foundation for success. She believes that sports provide not only a competitive outlet but also a safe haven where athletes can grow on and off the field.
Under Hurse's guidance, the MIU Women's Flag Football team looks ahead to an exciting season of growth and development. The program will focus on building strong fundamentals, fostering leadership among players, and creating a supportive environment where each athlete can thrive.
As MIU continues to expand its athletic offerings, the introduction of women's flag football represents another milestone in providing diverse and inclusive opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level.
