Bio
Coach Romel Bryant has firmly established himself as one of the most dynamic and transformational leaders in basketball today, delivering championship results and historic turnarounds at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.
During the 2024–2025 season at John Melvin University, Coach Bryant authored the most successful campaign in school history. Under his leadership, the program captured its first conference win ever, achieved the highest winning percentage the school has ever recorded, and surged to a No. 2 national power ranking, with a peak No. 4 national standing. The season was capped by a NSAC Tip-Off Classic Championship, while producing more wins in one year than all previous head coaches combined—a feat that permanently reshaped the program’s legacy.
Coach Bryant’s championship pedigree extends well beyond one season. At Olive-Harvey College, he helped guide the program to an undefeated conference season, a conference championship, and a regional championship appearance. At the professional level, he led the Chicago Ballers to a PBL Divisional Championship in 2022, further proving his ability to win at the highest levels of competition.
Recognized for excellence, Coach Bryant was named Illinois Basketball Coaching Association “Coach of the Year” in 2021, a reflection of both his on-court success and his impact on player development.
At the high school level, Coach Bryant is known as a program-builder and culture-changer. He holds the all-time wins and winning percentage records at Epic Academy, and orchestrated one of the most dramatic turnarounds in recent Chicago basketball history at Horizon Science Academy, transforming a winless program into Conference Champions in just two seasons, while also capturing a City Championship. His championship résumé also includes multiple regional, sectional, and super-sectional titles at Seton Academy, culminating in a state finals appearance.
A relentless developer of talent, Coach Bryant has coached two All-Americans, five All-Regional athletes, and multiple players who have gone on to professional basketball careers worldwide. His philosophy centers on accountability, toughness, and preparing athletes for success far beyond the game.
Despite a career-ending injury that ended his playing days, Coach Bryant’s love for basketball never faded. A former standout at Hales Franciscan High School, he continued his career at Beloit College, playing under respected coaches Bill Knapton and Lance Randall—experiences that helped shape the leader he is today.
