Emilia Katopodi Named Head Coach of MIU Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams
Maharishi International University is proud to announce Emilia Katopodi as the new Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams, bringing world-class experience and a global perspective to the MIU Athletics program.
Fairfield, Iowa — Katopodi began her tennis journey in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the age of four and quickly rose through the ranks to represent her country on the Ethiopian National Team, earning the nation's second-highest ranking. Her pursuit of excellence led her to train extensively in Germany and Spain, where she competed in numerous ITF tournaments across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Her diverse international background not only shaped her playing career but also inspired her passion for coaching. Katopodi has served as an assistant coach at youth summer camps in Ethiopia and at a tennis academy in Japan, where she helped young players refine their technique, confidence, and competitive mindset.
"I'm excited to be part of MIU's growing athletics community," Katopodi said. "My goal is to build a strong, competitive tennis program that values teamwork, discipline, and mental resilience. I want our athletes to experience tennis as both a sport and a path to self-discovery."
At MIU, Katopodi will lead the development of the university's tennis program with a vision to establish a competitive and sustainable team within the NAIA. Her coaching philosophy blends technical mastery with mental strength and holistic well-being, emphasizing the use of Transcendental Meditation (TM) to enhance focus, performance, and personal growth.
"Emilia's international experience and deep understanding of both the physical and mental aspects of the game make her an exceptional addition to our coaching staff," said Rubén Sánchez, MIU's Athletic Director. "Her leadership aligns perfectly with MIU's Consciousness-Based Sports approach, which integrates personal development with athletic excellence."
As MIU expands its athletic programs, Katopodi's leadership marks an exciting chapter for Pioneer Tennis, setting the foundation for future success and cultivating a culture of mindfulness, determination, and unity on the court.
