MIU Athletics Announces Hiring of Eric Sturgis as the New Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach

Maharishi International University Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Eric Sturgis as the new Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs, marking the launch of an exciting new chapter for Pioneer Tennis.

Coach Sturgis joins MIU with over a decade of collegiate coaching experience and a lifelong passion for the sport. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, he began playing tennis at just three years old and started coaching high school athletes at the age of 18. His early start in both playing and coaching laid the foundation for a career defined by leadership, development, and competitive excellence.

Sturgis holds a Master of Science in Sports Management from Eastern Michigan University, graduating magna cum laude. Throughout his career, he has built a strong reputation not only as a coach, but also as a mentor committed to the holistic development of student-athletes. His background includes captaining USTA teams at the Men's 4.5/5.0 level, demonstrating both high-level playing experience and strategic leadership on the court.

With over 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, Sturgis brings a deep understanding of recruiting, player development, and program building. His leadership comes at a pivotal time as MIU prepares to establish its tennis presence and compete on both the men's and women's sides.

When asked about joining MIU Athletics, Coach Sturgis expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up.

"After speaking with Ruben and Owen, I knew MIU was the perfect fit," said Sturgis. "The opportunity to start a tennis program from the ground up is something that I truly enjoy. The facilities and support for tennis at MIU also made this an easy decision. I am looking forward to having a team in the fall competing on both the Men's and Women's side."

With Coach Sturgis at the helm, MIU Tennis is focused on establishing a strong foundation, developing a competitive culture, and recruiting student-athletes who align with the university's mission of whole-person development.

Additional announcements regarding recruiting, schedules, and program updates will be shared in the upcoming months as MIU prepares for its Pioneer Tennis season.
